Questions
Last updated: 18 August 2026
Everything firms have asked, answered in full. If yours is not here, write to us — you will get a straight answer from the person who built the software, not a sales pitch.
Does anything I do get sent over the internet?
No. Your documents, your questions and the recordings of your calls all stay on your computer. You can unplug the network cable, or install it on a machine that has never been online, and everything still works exactly the same.
What about ABA Formal Opinion 512, or my own regulator's AI guidance?
That guidance turns on what happens when client information goes into a tool that transmits, stores or trains on it — vendor diligence, telling the client, informed consent. CaseWax does none of those, so there is no transfer for the questions to attach to. That describes the software, not legal advice: your own obligations remain yours to assess.
Will it actually run on our computers?
Usually yes, and worth being straight about: the AI runs on your machine rather than in a data centre, so it wants a reasonably modern computer. A recent office laptop is fine; a very old one will be slow. We check yours on the call and say so then, rather than let you find out mid-trial.
What happens on the 20-minute call?
We install it on one machine, point it at a folder of your own real case files, and you ask it something you already know the answer to. That is the fastest honest test of whether it is any use to you. You leave the call with a 30-day licence and no obligation.
What if I pay and it turns out not to help?
Full refund within thirty days of any paid licence, and you do not have to justify it — no form, no retention conversation. We would rather lose one invoice than have a firm resenting a tool it paid for.
Can it listen to Zoom, Teams or Webex calls, and what about consent?
Yes, and it works with any of them because it hears the sound your computer is playing along with your own microphone, so nothing has to join the meeting and no audio goes to a transcription service. Consent, though, stays with you: recording law varies, a number of US states and many other jurisdictions require every party to agree, and professional guidance generally advises telling a client before recording them whatever the statute allows. Tell your client you are taking notes, exactly as you would today, and CaseWax writes them down. It records only while you have it running.
Do you have SOC 2, or can you complete our security questionnaire?
We do not hold SOC 2 or ISO 27001, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. Those frameworks certify how a supplier protects data entrusted to it, and no data is entrusted to us: there is no server, no account and no transfer. We publish a one-page Confidentiality and Security Statement written for exactly this purpose, and we are happy to complete a questionnaire in writing and mark the inapplicable items as such.
How do I know it is not making things up?
Because it shows you. Every statement is labelled with the file and page it came from, and one click opens that document so you can read the wording yourself. If your files do not answer the question, it tells you that instead of inventing something. Ask the same question tomorrow and you get the same answer. You should still read the cited page before you rely on it — every answer is a starting point, not an opinion.
Is there a limit on how much I can use it?
No. There is no charge per question, no monthly allowance and no meter running. Inference happens on your own computer, so asking it a hundred questions in an afternoon costs you nothing extra — which is the practical difference from a cloud tool billed by the seat or the token.
Does it work outside the United States?
Yes, anywhere your documents are in English. The software reads and answers in English, so it suits practices in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other common-law jurisdictions working in English. It has no idea which country you are in and does not need to: it reads your files and cites them, rather than relying on a database of any one jurisdiction's law.
What kinds of files can it read?
PDFs, Word documents and plain text files, from as many folders as you want to give it, including everything in the subfolders. It reads them where they are and does not make copies.
Can you add something specific for our practice?
Usually, yes — and that is the practical advantage of buying from one engineer rather than a platform. A large vendor cannot justify building a field or a report for a single firm; here it is a conversation. Reasonable adjustments to how the software behaves come with your licence, and anything larger is quoted before any work starts. Tell us on the setup call what your matters actually look like.
How do updates work if the software never goes online?
There is no update mechanism inside the application and it never checks a server for a new version. When a new build exists — including one adjusted for your practice — we send you an installer and you decide whether and when to run it. Your IT provider stays in control of every version change, and nothing is ever pushed onto a machine.
Who is behind this?
One engineer, working directly with the firms that use it. There is no sales team and no support queue: the person who wrote the software is the person who answers your email and runs your setup call. Supplier details are on the imprint page.
What does it cost after the free month?
A licence for one computer is $199 for three months, or $699 for a full year — less than a single billable hour a month. That is the whole cost: no charge per question, no per-seat cloud fee and no automatic renewal. Choose the period in the form at the bottom of the landing page and we will send an invoice with your licence key.
How do I actually pay for a licence?
Through the same form as the free trial. Pick three months or a year, send us your details, and we reply within one working day with an invoice and payment details. We never ask for card numbers on the site, and nothing is charged until you decide to pay.
Can you set it up for the whole firm?
Yes. We can license several computers, install it quietly across your machines, and set up shared folders so everyone works from the same case files. Mention how many of you there are in the form and we will include a plan with your trial.
Still the fastest way to find out whether it is any use to you: twenty minutes, on your own case files, asking it something you already know the answer to.
